– Race of the month –

The 32nd edition of the Tour of Iran (Azerbaijan) took place on October 8-13. Part of the UCI Asia Tour, the six stage race through Iranian Azerbaijan is classed UCI 2.1, and covers 1017 kilometres. The race was contested by 15 teams from Iran, Australia, Europe, Japan, Kazakhstan, Bahrain and Syria. Dutch rider Robert Ruijgh (Tarteletto-Isorex) took the overall title, despite winning a single stage.

Jeroen Koos Kers (Baby-Dump CyclingTeam) of the Netherlands won the opening stage from a small breakaway group of 11, but lost it on the next day's mountainous stage that was won by Alexey Voloshin (Vino-Astana Motors), ahead of Ruijgh. Saeid Safarzadeh (Tabriz Shahrdary) took Stage 3 in a solo breakaway ahead of the field, with Voloshin remaining in the leader's jersey.

Ruijgh finally moved into the overall lead on Stage 4, when he was a member of a small break that did not contain Voloshin. Amir Kolahduoz Hagh (Pishgaman Cycling Team) won the stage. Italy's Davide Rebellin ( took Stage 5 victory from a small breakaway group, but it did not affect the overall standings. The final circuit race stage saw Australia's Theodore Yates (Drapac Pat's Veg Holistic Development Team) win the field sprint, with Ruijgh holding on to the overall lead by a slim four seconds over Ilya Davidenok (Tabriz Shahrdary).

– Focus on Serghei Tvetcov (ROU) –

Serghei Tvetcov

Serghei Tvetcov (Jelly Belly p/b Maxxis) of Romania has led the UCI America Tour rankings for the past two months after a season that included podium finishes in two of the biggest stages races in the United States. Tvetcov finished second overall in the Colorado Classic (UCI 2.HC), as well as winning a stage. He was third overall in the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah (UCI 2.HC) and finished second in a stage. Other results include second overall in the Tour of the Gila (UCI 2.2). He will move up to the Pro Continental ranks for 2018, joining UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling.
