– Race of the month –

Now in its 31st year, the Tour de Hokkaido (UCI 2.2), held on September 8-10, is part of the UCI Asia Tour. The overall title for 2017 was won by Marcos Garcia of Spain, racing for the Kinan Cycling Team. The three-stage event covers 415.9km, and is held on the island of Hokkaido, the second largest island of Japan and the most northern prefecture.

Japan's Suzuki Ryu (Bridgestone Anchor) won the opening 156.7km stage between Hakodate and Hokuto to take the leader's jersey. On Stage 2, at 182.3km the longest of the race, between Hokuto and Kikonai, Okamoto Hayato (Aisan Racing Team) won the field sprint to take over the lead in the overall standings. Garcia won the final 75.9km stage from Hakodate to Mount Hakodate in a solo breakaway by a slim two seconds, but it was enough to secure the title by six seconds over Nishizono Ryota (Bridgestone Anchor).

Willem Jakobus Smit

Willem Jakobus Smit of South Africa moved into the lead of the UCI Africa Tour rankings at the end of September after a strong month of racing. His year began strongly with victory in the road race at the Continental Championships and fourth place in the time trial at the same event. He also won the Tour Meles Zenawi for Green Development (UCI 2.2), including the points jersey and the fifth stage. He will join the UCI WorldTeam Katusha Alpecin for 2018.
