– Race of the month –

The Tour of Oman was the second stage race on the 2017 UCI Asia Tour, running from February 14th to 19th. A UCI 2.HC race as of 2012, it was held for the first time in 2010. The two-time Olympic time trial champion Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland won the inaugural edition.

In this year's six-stage race, Norway's Alexander Kristoff (Team Katusha Alpecin) won the opening 173 kilometre stage in a sprint finish, to take the leader's Red Jersey. A day later he lost the jersey to Ben Hermans (BMC Racing Team), who won the stage. Hermans kept the leader's jersey for the rest of the race to win the overall title. Hermans also won stage 5. Kristoff won two more sprint stages (stages 4 and 6), with Soren Kragh Andersen (Team Sunweb) the only other rider to win a stage (stage 3).

Merhawi Kudus

Merhawi Kudus of Eritrea has started the 2017 season off very strongly, with his win in the Young Rider competition at the Tour of Oman, where he finished fourth overall. Kudus, a former trainee of the UCI World Cycling Centre in Aigle, Switzerland, rode for the MTN-Qhubeka UCI Professional Continental Team in 2014 and 2015. He joined Team Dimension Data in 2016 and remains with the UCI WorldTour squad this season. After riding the Vuelta a España in 2014, the young rider made history in 2015 when he was named on the start list of the Tour de France, becoming one of the first two black Africans to start the Tour, alongside team-mate and countryman Daniel Teklehaimanot. In 2016 he again rode the Vuelta a España as well as the Giro d'Italia. Last year he finished third in his National Championships time trial and fourth in the road race.
