UCI Mountain Bike Masters World Championships: last week to enter
For the second year running, the Masters World Championships are being held in conjunction with the UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships for Elite riders. This year they take place in Hafjell – Lillehammer (Norway) from August 22nd to 27th, one week before the Elite competitions in the same venue (September 2-7).
“We used this formula for the first time last year in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa,” explains UCI Off-Road Manager Peter Van den Abeele. “It proved extremely popular with the Masters athletes who benefit from the atmosphere and facilities in place for the Elite riders. The majority stay on to watch the Elite World Championships.”
The UCI Mountain Bike Masters World Championships comprise competitions for Olympic Cross-country (XCO) and Downhill (DHI). They are open to athletes who do not possess an Elite licence and who have no UCI ranking points. The winners of each age group are awarded a World Champion’s rainbow jersey.
This year, the XCO racing will be held on a 6km loop designed on the cross-country ski circuit of the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympic Games. Participants will complete the loop a different number of times, depending on their age category.
The DHI athletes will race on the same track in Hafjell as the Elite riders, although the course will be adapted to render it less demanding.
“I urge all Downhill riders to come and race this varied track and also try out the other tracks in the Hafjell Bike Park,” said Event Coordinator Thor Nagell. “And the XCO riders will discover a great new track at the Lillehammer Olympic Ski Stadium.”
So far, 400 athletes from 40 countries have signed up for the 2014 UCI Masters Mountain Bike World Championships. Entries are accepted on the event’s website and close on Monday August 11th at 23.59.
