Mountain bike four-cross world titles up for grabs in Val di Sole
The UCI MTB Four-cross World Championships return to Val di Sole, Italy, on August 24-25 for the third consecutive year. Val di Sole is located in Trentino, the north-eastern region of Italy, and has a long history of playing host to mountain bike events, including the 2008 UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships and the UCI MTB Four-cross World Championships in 2015 and 2016.
The four-cross track in Val di Sole, created for the 2008 UCI Word Championships, is one of only a few permanent tracks, and is among the most stunning and challenging courses in the world. At 600 metres, the track is the longest on the 4X Pro Tour circuit. Riders compete four at a time, with the top two from each heat moving to the next round, until there are only four left to compete for the rainbow jersey. Racing takes place at night under lights in front of thousands of fans.
In the women's field, defending UCI World Champion Caroline Buchanan (Australia), who was also victorious in 2009 and 2010, will be looking for her fourth title. Other podium contenders include Germany's Franziska Meyer, the silver medalist last year, Helene Fruhwirth (Austria) and Romana Labounkova (Czech Republic).
The 45-rider men's field is led by defending UCI World Champion Mitja Ergaver of Slovenia. However, the entry list contains multiple podium contenders, including last year’s silver and bronze medallists, Hannes Slavik (Austria) and Luke Cryer (Great Britain) as well as former UCI World Champions Aiko Göhler of Germany (2015) and Tomas Slavik of the Czech Republic (2010 and 2014).
Timed seeding runs for women and men will take place on Thursday August 24th, with the finals being raced on Friday, August 25th
